“Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is one of the historical churches in Newark. The church was constructed in 1899. The church is the centre of their community of faith. On June 11, 1899, at laying the cornerstone for the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Bishop Bernard McQuaid spoke of Newark's grand Cathedral as "a fitting monument to the faith". Special Masses are also honored at the Cathedral Basilica each year for school children, the sick, their caregivers, and public servants. Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is home to a parish community of disciples who regularly gather here to worship, serve, learn, and receive the sacraments. The 'Sacred Heart' title honors Jesus Christ's love for humanity. Jesus made the human face of God's love present in Galilee. The cathedral invites you to let it lead you in prayer and deepen your faith, hope, and love.
