“ Nat Greene Trail, Atlantic & Yadkin Greenway is a perfect spot to enjoy a diverse array of recreational opportunities like hiking, walking and more. This is a 10.6-km out-and-back trail that is generally considered a moderately challenging route. This trail takes approximately 2 hours and 16 minutes to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, and visitors can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. “ 2026 Highlights: Big Loop Trail is a 5 km circular hiking route in Bur Mill Park, offering a scenic outdoor experience with lovely water views. The trail has 61 m of elevation gain and typically takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. The route begins from the Atlantic and Yadkin Greenway parking lot near the Frank Sharpe Jr. Wildlife Education Center. Visitors can enjoy forested surroundings, lakes, bird watching, and hiking along a route that is suitable for dogs on lead. The trail is also popular with mountain bikers and dogwalkers, so hikers should expect to share the path. Some sections have sparse trail markers, making it advisable to check a map regularly while following the route.”

Beautiful well manicured and maintained. Incredible history! Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. A must visit location for a student or enthusiast of the Revolutionary War.

These trails are very well kept up. The bridge with the locks on it gives romantic walk vibes. I walked a little loop, I'd suggest naming it a little longer little loop, but it was beautiful regardless. The area feels safe to walk or bike alone as a female.

Great paved/concrete trail for walking/biking/running with mountain bike trails that branch off to the sides of the main trail.

I had a great time on the Atlantic Greenway and the Owl Roost Trail!.

BIG LOOP TRAIL REVIEWS

Nice 2.2 mile hike from the driving range parking lot. Slight climb from the lake back towards the pool but nothing extreme. If piece and quiet is what your after this trail isn’t it though. The western side of the trail is close to Hwy 220 so you’ll hear allot of traffic noise. Pretty good view of the lake on the northern side, and the trail links to the greenway for many more trail options beyond. If new to mountain biking this is a really great trail to gain some experience. The only slightly technical part of the trail is near the volleyball courts and it’s easy to roll thru it. With at least 4 entrances to the trail from within Burmill park you can shorten up the trail if your time is limited, Or start at the pool and bike the west side down to the greenway for a fun quick downhill experience. Really a great trail.

Parked off the main drag- there’s only room for about 5 cars but there’s a larger parking lot less then a mile down. Go to that one. Went trail running here for the first time. Pretty busy when I went, but when I got to the Big Loop trail off the main paved trail, very little people so was able to enjoy a lot of nature. Lots of loops and technical trails to run/walk/hike. Be prepared for tree roots and incline/declines. Trail signs could be better but stay right and you’ll complete the 'loop'. Very beautiful and a great area for birding! Will definitely be back. Oh and lots of people fishing so I’m sure it’s great for that too!.

@June.2025 Trail is clear and easy, but the trail looks the same and lack of variety. Some may find it boring. I started from the parking lot and took a little over half an hour to come back. There are two parking areas close to each other, and total capacity is about 30 cars. There is a portable toilet in the parking lot.
