“Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect migratory birds and the wildlife of the Rio Grande Valley. The trail is 12 minutes and 8.2 miles distance from McAllen. This 2,088-acre area is known as the "jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System" because the refuge is situated directly in the heart of all this biological richness. The elevation gain of the trail is 3 to 15 meters. Santa Ana allows travelers to witness birds, butterflies, and many other species unique to the United States' deep South. The primary attractions of the refuge are the cool tower and suspension bridge. There is also a selection of trails with different distances from which visitors can choose. Almost half of all butterfly species identified in the United States can be found here.”
