Matthew Jones House is one of the iconic landmarks in Newport News, VA. Initially built in 1725 as a one-and-a-half-story frame dwelling with brick chimneys, the House underwent two significant renovations. Matthew Jones House is an architectural museum house showcasing three distinct historical periods and has 90 architectural characteristics labeled as teaching points. The House is a historic plantation house atop a hill at the northern end of Mulberry Island, offering stunning views of the James River. The National Park Service, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, took measures to preserve and rehabilitate the House. Its design is reminiscent of the tiny English mansion houses of the previous century. The House has been recognized as a Virginia Historic Landmark and a Historic American Building. Additionally, the collections in the House highlight the history of Mulberry Island.
