I've been in Abilene quite a long time thanks to Dyess AFB, but I originally come from the north east where the Baltimore and Washington DC zoos are a fair short distance away. That being said, the fact that a town the size of Abilene has its own zoo is amazing to me. Just watching how this zoo has transformed from the first time I visited in 1998 to present day is spectacular. The reptile house is by far my favorite exhibit. There's a train ride for kids and adults as well as a carousel.

This is a fun little museum describing the trials and tribulations of the frontiersmen that helped to settle the west. It is very Disney-esque in its use of technology to bring the various historical characters to life in an entertaining way. You start off with a short film, introducing the characters. Then you traverse the museum, checking out the exhibits and getting to know the historical characters better. They have short, holographic video vignettes that are absolutely fascinating.

This WWII museum is one of Abilene's hidden gems. There are 3 floors of various aspects of the war. There are American uniforms, guns, equipment, medals, and much more. They have a whole section dedicated to Nazi memorabilia from their weapons, guns, equipment, uniform, medals, etc. There's a section dedicated to the holocaust, a prisoner of war section, another dedicated to different vehicles including a tank, and so much more. The admittance fee is just $5 for adults and it's definitely worth.
