Shubert Theatre aims to bring a world-class venue for the performing arts. The theatre has 1,664 seats and was opened by The Shubert Organization. The theatre was designed by Albert Swazey, a New York architect, and built by the H.E. Murdock Construction Company. The theatre showcases a wide array of programs to a diverse community. Shubert Theatre is the crown jewel of downtown New Haven. The theatre was built for the live theater experience, intimate, personal, and immediate. The theatre has featured over 600 out-of-town tryouts, including more than 300 world premieres and over 50 American premieres. Shubert Theatre has reopened under city ownership in 1983, operated by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts. The theatre is currently operated as a non-profit organization by CAPA (The Connecticut Association for the Performing Arts).
