“Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has split its encyclopedic collections into many large curatorial divisions, several of which relate to galleries. The museum was opened in 1936 and is owned and controlled by the Commonwealth of Virginia. The expansion and transformation of the VMFA’s 13 1/2-acre campus were designed by London-based architect Rick Mather in association with SMBW, a Richmond architectural firm. The museum has more than 5,000 years of art from around the world. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one of the seven museums selected internationally to show and exhibit one hundred and seventy-six paintings from the personal collection of Pablo Picasso. VMFA is open 365 days a year, and general admission is always free.”
