St. Joseph Catholic Church was built in 1907 and is a historic church in Bakersfield. A plain table replaced the old, ornate pre-Vatican II altar, and the walls of both the main sanctuary and the side chapel were decorated with colorful geometric designs. The church went through many redecorations of the interior, a pattern that lasted until Monsignor John Esquivel's pastorate. The church provides religious education for all children aged 3, 4, 5, and 6. They teach by prayer, narrative, art, music, and games. St. Joseph Catholic Church aims to lay a foundation for lifelong religious education for their children. They concentrate on being their weekly Sunday mass scriptural readings. It affords confessions on Thursday at 6 pm. Spanish and English are available.

St. Philip the Apostle Church was established in 1968 and was split to create a new parish for Bakersfield's rapidly expanding Southwest area. St. Philip, the Apostle, purchased 11.2 acres containing four classrooms. It is about 10,000 square feet tall.St. Philip Church provides professional pre-school education in a caring and welcoming Christian environment. The curriculum is based on a biblical theme that uses music, art, bible stories, games, and prayer to create a positive learning experience that enriches the children's faith.
