THE MISSION RESTAURANT
304 East Onondaga Street, Syracuse, NY 13202 Directions
The Mission Restaurant's owner and the head chef were Steve Morrison. Steve began his culinary profession as the kitchen supervisor at the former Greenhouse Café on the SU hill. The restaurant evokes a magical, airy twilight somewhere in Latin America, but embedded deep in the building's foundation is a cramped tunnel listed with a historic, Central New York magic of its own. This building, invented in the 1840s and formerly the Syracuse Wesleyan Methodist Church, was also a significant 19th-century way-terminal on the Underground Railroad. It has prided itself on serving authentic-prepared Mexican cuisine while also combining dishes from other Latin American nations and the southwestern United States. The Mission's cocktails use these wine-based drinks to comply with prohibition-era laws that allow them to trade only beer and wine.
