I’ll never forget the first time I spoke with samm on the phone. I had been praying about pursuing homebirth with my fourth, and unplanned, baby. I was *timidly* calling around to homebirth midwives after having a super discouraging appointment with midwives at a hospital practice. I had already had a hospital vba2c, but expressed to her that I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to have a vaginal birth without augmentation with Pitocin(what my precious OB ha told me). She said, “I haven’t seen any evidence to support that claim. And I was sold. Samm and her team are so great. Caring, evidence based, and hands off. If you’re coming from the hospital setting and not used to that, it’s a bit shocking at first-to have your care provider leave decisions to you. But it’s so empowering and now I couldn’t imagine birthing any other way. I saw this meme that said something like I want zero more kids but 100 more home births, and that is exactly how I felt after doing prenatal care and a birth with Samm. She’s a treasure. And the connection that homebirth gave me to my fourth baby was just unlike any of my other births. It was a stretch to afford a homebirth out of pocket, but it was 10000% worth it. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

We had the best experience with Samm and her team for the homebirth of our first child! We chose homebirth as the best option to avoid unnecessary medical intervention and could not be more happy with how it went. (My husband constantly tells his friends how great it was!) I had a quick recovery and we have a thriving, happy and healthy boy. We will be back!!!

Samm was suggested to me when i was having second thoughts about my current birthing plan & i am SO glad that i was! she was very helpful throughout my entire pregnancy and was really like a friend i could talk to every time i went to my appointments(: although my birth went super quick & they got there almost as my daughter was coming out hahaha, the treatment of myself and my daughter postpartum was so thoughtful <3 i 100% recommend Samm and her team.. i couldn’t have done it without they’re help throughout my pregnancy and they’re help postpartum <3

Ray and Victoria are extremely skillful and empathetic midwives. The journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is just about the most vulnerable, scary, and precious thing one can go through- and I’d trust Refuge Midwifery every time. They offer unhurried and thorough care, and truly care about the families they work with. I felt so safe with them during the entire journey together. My birth had a few minor complications that were dealt with confidently and with ease at home. They are really amazing and should be HEAVILY considered if you are planning a home birth in the Philly area!

I highly recommend Refuge Midwifery!! I had an amazing experience throughout the process. They are very knowledgeable care providers with excellent clinical decision making and skills.

If you’re planning on having a home birth in the Philadelphia area, I can’t recommend Ray and Victoria enough. They are the most perfect mix of friend and provider. I knew during my whole pregnancy and birth that they had my best interests in mind, and fully supported whatever decisions I made. We had lots of great conversations prenatally about different decisions we could make, and I always felt comfortable asking lots of questions so we could truly make fully informed decisions.

I had two wonderful hospital births with Mac in 2023 after risking out of the birthing center with LifeCycle late in my first pregnancy and then again with PMC from the start of my next pregnancy in 2025 with Payj. Both midwives helped me make informed choices about my risk tolerance and the decisions available to me while pregnant. I found them both extremely knowledgeable, helpful, steadfast, grounding, and assertive in making my needs known to the other healthcare professionals in the room during labor and delivery. The portal message system leaves something to be desired and it can be frustrating to have to wait for a response for a non-emergent question or request, but when the midwives are available and able to respond they are thorough and attentive. I would absolutely recommend this practice to anyone in the Philly area considering a home or hospital birth.

In my 38 years on the earth - this was the absolute best experience I’ve ever had with an exam. It was the most comfortable & heard I’ve ever ever felt. Midwife Payj is an amazing human who is insanely knowledgeable, present and engaged. If I have the opportunity to have another home-birth, I’d be honored to have her by my side. Truly blown away. Would give 100 stars if I could. I highly recommend supporting this amazing private practice - you won’t regret it!!! Wonderful provider!

When I had my second baby, I wanted a different experience than my first birth. I was looking for a practice where patients were listened to and where practitioners were knowledgeable in current best-care practices and willing to share their knowledge so that patients could make informed decisions about their care. Most importantly, I wanted a care team who was compassionate. I found that with Mac and PMC. I had the birth experience that I wanted and that I felt comfortable with ( a successful hospital VBAC). I felt like I was heard and my concerns were acknowledged every step of the way. I could not be more impressed with PMC!
