"Boonshoft Museum of Discovery offers visitors of all ages hands-on learning opportunities, living biology lessons, special exhibitions, and more. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, affiliated with the Association of Children's Museums, and is a governing member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers. The museum maintains a collection of live animals from Ohio and other countries in addition to a sizable natural history collection as part of its presentations. Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and its sibling organization, SunWatch Indian Village, a museum of the area's Fort Ancient Native Americans from the 12th century, are both run by the Dayton Society of Natural History. Educational outreach extends to the community by providing in-school programming and special on-site programs. Admission is free for children 2 and under and DSNH members.

2026 Highlights: Boonshoft Museum of Discovery lets visitors apply the cost of their regular admission toward an annual membership if they upgrade within 14 days of their visit by presenting the original receipt and purchasing the membership in person."

“Dayton Art Institute was a resident of the grand Kemper, which was demolished in 1945. The museum was formerly a small art collection and an art school. The museum offers a full range of programming in addition to exhibiting its collection and special exhibitions. The name was changed to the Dayton Art Institute in 1927 to better represent the institution's expanding significance. The collection at the Dayton Art Institute includes more than 27,000 pieces that span 5,000 years of artistic history. The museum has approximately 1,000 pieces from the collection on display at any given time in the galleries of the Dayton Art Institute. The Dayton Art Institute also houses galleries for outdoor sculpture, African art, ancient art, Oceanic art, American ancient art, and photography and glass.”

We visited the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force to celebrate my husband’s birthday—and it was the perfect place for it! He absolutely enjoyed every moment. There’s so much to see and experience, whether you’re a history buff, an aviation enthusiast, or just curious about the evolution of flight. The museum is divided into four massive hangar-like galleries (or "chambers"), each highlighting different eras and themes—from the early days of flight to World War II, the Cold War, and modern aviation. The displays are well-curated, informative, and immersive. One of the best parts You can actually go inside some of the aircraft, including Air Force One and several cargo planes. It’s amazing to walk through these historic planes and imagine what it was like for those who once flew in them. We also really enjoyed the rides they offer! The simulators gave us a thrilling and interactive experience—it added an extra layer of fun to an already amazing visit. Overall, it was a memorable experience—educational, awe-inspiring, and fun. Highly recommended if you’re in the area, and definitely worth the trip for a unique birthday outing or family adventure.

The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force is an incredible place! The collection of aircraft is massive, covering everything from WWI and WWII planes to modern jets and space exhibits. Walking through the Presidential Gallery and seeing Air Force One up close was a highlight. The museum is well-organized, free to enter, and has interactive exhibits that make it engaging for all ages. The Cold War and Space Galleries are especially impressive. Tip: Wear comfortable shoes—there’s a lot to see, and you can easily spend the whole day exploring! Highly recommend this place to anyone interested in aviation or history.

This place is a national treasure. What more could you ask for in aviation. It almost takes 2 days to completely soak in everything. Free, and totally kid friendly with so much to learn and see. There is a place out back to take a break and have a picnic and then go back in to finish seeing everything. We are from Toledo and it's worth the 2.5 hour drive. We have been here 4 times total. The presidential part is my favorite where you can walk through some of the planes for viewing.

BOONSHOFT MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY REVIEWS

The museum was fun and great for all ages. The staff were helpful. The food in the snack area was priced great and very tasty. Something on the menu for all ages. The bathrooms and changing areas were spotless and very clean. Had a chance to also visit the Planetarium show and it was relaxing and informative. This place is a hidden gem for Dayton and hopefully more people will stop in and check this place out.

As always, we had a great time, the staff was wonderful, and we enjoyed talking to the partners as part of the Earth Day festivities. We also appreciate the access via Museums for All and appreciate how it helps those of us who may not have other means to visit local museums.

I really enjoy going here with my little. He loves every part and I especially love the animals. There were a few parts of the stars & space exhibit that were not functional or really needed to be updated, but overall a great place.

A genuine prize for any city, the Dayton Art Institute is such an extraordinary thing. It embodies everything that any Museum would hope to be. It is a beautiful structure full of beautiful things, and there isn't any reason in the world to miss it. There are countless displays of art from every era and of every type. The building itself is a work of art! They're also are a number of ways for people to gain additional education and understanding of art in general. It also hosts numerous events and festivals which make the trip even more rewarding. Go to the Dayton Art Institute, take your family and friends, and perhaps donate a little money to keep this special place alive.

The diverse and remarkable collections offer a rich cultural experience, with exhibition halls that are easy to navigate. The cloister is absolutely stunning, providing a unique backdrop that’s a joy to photograph. A must-visit for art lovers and photographers alike.

What an amazing art museum. I visited with some of my Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum at Miami University colleagues. We loved it.
