The park was first opened as a public garden in 1837. In 1962, Charleston sculptor Willard Hirsch was approved by Miss Sally Carrington to form a bronze statue of a dancing girl. The statue was given as a gift to the city and installed as a water fountain in White Point Garden on a shallow granite base so children could use it easily.
