"Dr. Joseph L. Koen is a board-certified neurosurgeon at Neurosurgical Specialists, Inc. He finished his doctorate in medicine at The Ohio State University. He did his residency and internship at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Joseph L. Koen specializes in brain tumors, both benign and malignant. He also completed advanced training in skull-base approaches and CyberKnife and Varian True Beam stereotactic radiosurgery. Dr. Joseph was the first to use implanted chemotherapy for treating malignant brain tumors. He has also developed a frameless, minimally invasive stereotactic biopsy system for brain tumors and other lesions. Dr. Joseph L. Koen has a special interest and expertise in cerebrovascular surgery, including arteriovenous malformations, intracranial aneurysms, cavernous malformations, and dural arteriovenous fistulae. 2026 Update: Dr. Joseph L. Koen has over 30 years of experience in the medical field. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), and the Society of Lateral Access Surgery (SOLAS). Dr. Koen introduced a robotic exoscope for microneurosurgery that could replace the traditional microscope. He also uses advanced diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to map brain pathways, helping make surgeries for tumors and other conditions safer."
