Memphis Zoo aims to improve the security and stability of animal populations both in the wild and in human care. The zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Recently, the zoo was voted the 8th best zoo in the United States. The zoo houses over 4,500 animals representing more than 500 different species. Memphis Zoo has completed more than $93 million in upgrades and expansions since the early 1990s. It features a farm, Cat Country, Primate Canyon, and Night Life exhibits. The zoo provides its animals with a naturalistic and enriching environment, and its visitors with a safe, comfortable, entertaining, and educational experience. School community admissions are available for schools registered with their state board of education on a first-come, first-served basis, Monday through Friday. Memphis Zoo offers many discounts for members. Admission is free for children under 2 years old (ages 0–23 months).
