History Museum of Mobile was built from 1855 to 1857 to serve as a city hall and as a marketplace. The museum is a visual marvel that offers an unprecedented experience. The museum has over 117,000 artifacts that interweave the rich, complex, and sometimes tumultuous history of Mobile and the surrounding region, from the prehistoric past to the present. The Special Exhibition Gallery often shifts regularly so that tourists can experience something new with every return. Mobile's City Hall and Southern Market complex comprised four buildings and covered two-thirds of the block between Royal and Church streets. The most significant feature of this building was the Southern Mobile Market. The museum was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973 as a rare well-preserved example of a 19th-century multifunction civic and commercial building. Free admission for Children (5 and under).
