History Museum of Mobile is where Mobile's story starts. The History Museum of Mobile is a visual marvel that offers an unprecedented experience in the museum. Over 117,000 artifacts interweave the rich, complex, and sometimes tumultuous history of Mobile and the surrounding region, from the prehistoric past to the present. The History Museum is housed in the Old City Hall, South Market building at 111 South Royal Street, in the center of downtown. The Special Exhibition Gallery often shifts regularly so that tourists can experience something new with every return visit. The third and possibly most significant feature of this building was the Southern Mobile Market. The Mobile Museum of Art (MMA) is an everlasting series of about 6,000 first-rate and ornamental works of artwork from America, Asia, and Europe. The series covers periods from classical antiquity to the present. MMOFA is assisted by a special public / private City Partnership and Community Engagement. Its premises are managed by the City of Mobile and the Art Collection. The Art Museum has a schedule for revolving, special exhibits as well as collection shows. Founded in 1964, MMOFA has evolved from a modest project of the City of Mobile Board of Commissioners and two private arts organizations, the Allied Arts Council and the Mobile Arts Association, to the only authorized art museum in southern Alabama.
