“Holy Family Old Cathedral is one of the most spiritual churches in Anchorage. The church celebrated 100 years as well. The parish has been established in downtown Anchorage since 1915. The cathedral is a mother church of the former Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Anchorage, from the erection of that Archdiocese in 1966 to its canonical suppression in 2020. In 1974, the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans, were invited by Archbishop Ryan to staff the Cathedral. This allowed the Archdiocese to develop its former mission stations into vibrant, self-supporting parishes in the greater Anchorage area. The actual main entrance into the cathedral was along the side of the building through the tower. The architectural firm of McEntire and Pendergast designed a new entrance to the main facade. The church features two pairs of doors with oversized transoms that replaced a large window. The exterior had been a natural gray color from its construction.
