Whiteford graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his general surgery internship and residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went on to complete a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS).
