“The Texas Capitol is 302.64 feet tall, the sixth-tallest state capitol building. In 1970, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1986, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The building has the offices and chambers of the Texas Legislature and the Governor of Texas, and was designed by architect Elijah E. Myers. The building was built from 1882 to 1888 under the direction of civil engineer Reuben Lindsay Walker. The Texas Capitol features a magnificent round dome crowned by the "Goddess of Liberty," an almost 16-foot-tall statue of a woman holding a gold five-pointed star. The chambers of the legislature are two of the most significant spaces in the Capitol building, which has 181 members. Free tours last about 30 minutes.”
