Specialty:
"Alcatraz Island is the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is designated as a National Historic Landmark. The small island was developed in the mid-19th century with a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison, and a federal prison. Park rangers take tours revealing the facility's fascinating past, along with exciting stories about Al Capone and other notable figures. The island received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
2026 Update: Alcatraz Island prison’s historical interpretation goes beyond famous inmates and escape stories. The park focuses strongly on themes of justice, incarceration, rehabilitation, and human impact. This broader perspective is especially visible in “The Big Lockup” exhibition discussing mass incarceration in the United States. The site promotes scenic views of San Francisco Bay, historic structures, gardens, wildlife, and bird habitats alongside prison exhibits. It highlights active historic preservation projects. Visitors can still access large portions of the island while restoration and conservation work continue. Educational engagement is a major focus. Programs such as Junior Ranger activities, ranger talks, exhibits, and self-guided learning experiences are designed for both children and adults."
