"Arizmendi" is the shortened name of Jose Maria Arizmendiarrieta, a young priest who encouraged and supported the founding of the Mondragon Cooperatives in the Basque Country of Spain in the 1950s. Arizmendi Bakery was started as a single firm with roughly 25 people in 1956 and has now grown into a significant international presence with over 100,000 employees across some 250+ worker-owned enterprises and affiliated companies. The shop’s bread is made by hand using organic flour imported from Italy, and its products are infused with both traditional and innovative flavors.
