3 Best Bakeries in Washington, DC

Outstanding DC bakery with some of the best, most delightfully flaky croissants I've found in the District so far! Located at the top of a hill in Cleveland Park, Bread Furst can be a bit of a trek to get to, but it is absolutely worth every step. This popular shop can get quite busy, so definitely take a moment to scope out the pastry case before you hop in line. They have one staff member take your order at the case, and then they'll enter it into a handheld POS system that punts your order over to the cashiers. Once you've shared your order for pastries, bread, or savories, you can hop over to the cashier to give your drink order and pay. I usually get their classic pain au chocolat, my favorite way to judge any bakery. They execute on this traditional pastry beautifully; it is delightfully flaky and has a gorgeously laminated dough and glossy, crispy finish. It comes with a generous portion of chocolate and is generally the perfect breakfast or mid-day sweet treat, especially when paired with a cup of coffee. I've also sampled their sour cherry and sea salt cookie, which is quite fun; the cookie itself is buttery and thick, and I love the way the tart cherries and salt counterbalance the sugar to create a complex, not-too-sweet treat.

As someone who loves to make charcuterie boards, this is one of the best places to get farm to table market ingredients such as cheese, jams, pickles, etc. Not only do they have exceptional artisan bread, but the variety of items to pair with these baked goods are endless. This bakery will definitely be a staple for my future DC visits.

Heaven! Best bread and sandwiches. My husband lived in Paris for two years and the sandwiches here were the best he ever had. My son asked how something so simple can be so good. We are already planning our next visit.

The apricot tart was exactly what I needed. The bread was soft and flaky with a creamy and smooth filling that balanced well with the tart fruit. The ordering itself was a bit confusing since it was not straightforward whether the ordering was done at the register or before hand but maybe that was just me. The atmosphere was great as well. A cute are with plants in the back as well as a nice view out to georgetown in the front.

This cozy French bistro is the perfect spot for a delicious and relaxing breakfast. They boast a wide selection of French pastries and desserts, making it a perfect place for those with a sweet tooth. Additionally, they offer breakfast dishes. We tried the ham and cheese croissant, chicken salad croissant, and éclair, and everything was delicious.

Pastries were great! the vibe was great and the staffs were super friendly. Even though we got a large order they were courteous throughout the whole process, boxed the pastries with care and most importantly, all tasted great. The lines were long but it was definitely worth the wait!
